Gianfranco Zola and his hapless West Ham side face a rejuvenated, but albeit still last placed, Portsmouth side this coming Saturday at Upton Park in London. Avraam Grant appears to have steadied the Portsmouth ship since taking over a month ago from Paul Hart and the Pompey fans will be looking at the rest of the season with renewed optimism. West Ham entertained Chelsea last time out and managed to gain a very respectable point from the league leaders. The Hammers enjoyed the better of the first half in the East-West London derby and managed to take the lead on the stroke of half time thanks to a converted penalty from Italian player Alessandro Diamanti.

Chelsea upped their game a bit in the second half but the Hammers still impressed, despite their lowly league position and terrible run of form of late. Nevertheless, it was Chelsea that equalised thanks to a very strange penalty. First of all the penalty was hotly debated by West Ham, and television replays suggested they were right to complain. Second, the referee ordered Frank Lampard’s penalty to be retaken twice due to encroachment. The tree-times taken penalty was actually scored each time; the final one officially counting.

For their part, Portsmouth come into the game at Upton Park on the back of a very good home victory over Liverpool last time out. They beat the Reds 2-0 and was very good value for their win, at the same time heaping more pressure on beleaguered Reds boss Rafa Benitez.
