Despite beating Liverpool the week before at home, Portsmouth travelled up to London on Boxing Day for a vital clash with fellow strugglers West Ham at Upton Park and lost the game by two goals to nil. That was definitely not the result Grant was looking for in the “six pointer” and as a result he has seen his team drop to four points from safety while still occupying last place in the league table.
With the situation in the league at crisis point, it is hard to know what Avraam Grant will decide when it comes to team selection for the cup game against Coventry. Will he try to rest his key players in the game, deeming the cup to be of secondary importance to Premier League survival? Or will he try and emulate Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth team of two years ago that actually won the cup?
Whatever the manager does decide to do though, he really is in a no win situation. If he plays a weakened team and gets knocked out, he will be lambasted. If he fields a strong team and they get knocked out, again he will be lambasted.
Coventry come into the game sitting in sixteenth position in the Championship with 28 points. On Boxing Day they beat Doncaster Rovers 1-0 at home thanks to a late goal.
